Journaling Your Way: Finding Comfort in Authenticity, Not Perfection

Many people believe that journaling is something we should do every day, and that we need to pour our hearts out onto the pages, but this isn't necessarily true. The aim of this blog is to explore how we can use journaling to ease negative emotions without feeling obligated to write endless pages every single day.


It's completely normal to have a messy journal page when you're feeling confused or have many thoughts running through your mind. Don't worry if your page isn't neat and tidy; it doesn't mean you're disorganized or can't express yourself. It's also okay if you're having trouble making sense of your thoughts and emotions.


When it comes to writing, the most important thing is to express your emotions in a way that feels authentic to you, and that truly reflects how you're feeling inside. Personally, I don't write in my journal every day. Instead, I only write when I need a safe space to express myself without fear of judgment.


Now, let's discuss some steps you can take to make your journaling experience more comfortable:


1. If you prefer to use physical stationery for journaling, it's worth investing in cute and comfortable supplies to make the experience more enjoyable. Choosing a lovely notebook or diary, as well as a pen that feels good to write with, can make a big difference in how you feel while jotting down your thoughts and worries. And, be sure to pick a pen that won't cause any discomfort.


2. It's crucial to remember that your journal is your personal and private space, so nobody else should know about it or where you keep it. This is because it's like having a trusted best friend where you can freely express yourself without worrying about being judged. If you're using a physical journal, you may want to keep it in a secret or secure location. As for digital journals, it's a good idea to use a password to protect your entries from unwanted eyes.


3. Take a moment to create a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Try lighting a candle, using an essential oil diffuser, or burning an incense stick to create a pleasant ambiance. These simple touches can enhance your journaling experience and help you feel relaxed. You can also play some soothing background music to further set the mood. There are plenty of options for calming music online that can help you concentrate while you write.


4. When it comes to writing, do it in a way that feels comfortable and natural for you. There will be days when you don't feel like writing a lot, but you still want to let your thoughts out. In those moments, it's completely okay to use bullet points, mind maps, or write down a few words that capture what you're feeling. Don't worry if you don't have the energy for long-form writing, the important thing is to express yourself in a way that works for you.


5. Don't hold back your emotions when writing in your journal. Let it all out, whether you're expressing your anger towards your boss for talking rudely to you today or allowing yourself to cry if you feel the need. Remember, your journal is your safe space where you can pour your heart out without fear of being judged. Trust that you'll feel better after releasing your emotions.



It's important to remember that journaling can sometimes be emotionally exhausting, so it's essential to incorporate a self-care routine after journaling to take care of yourself.

Here are some self-care tips that I personally find helpful:

  1. Make sure to hydrate yourself with a refreshing glass of water.

  2. Take a few moments to practice some breathing meditation to help soothe your mind.

  3. Consider watching a comedy movie or series to lift your mood. One of my personal favorite comfort series on Netflix after a depressing journaling session is "Friends".
